Mexicondo.com presents...

Mayan Palace

Puerto Penasco, Mexico

Here are some photos we took while visiting there in January of 2005

Click on the thumbnail photo to see the full size version.

MP rockypt sign2.jpg (77337 bytes)  Here is the sign directing you to turn onto the dirt road that takes you to the Mayan Palace.  You will drive on this road for 7 kilometers and pass two different guard houses.

Another view of the dirt road leading to Mayan Palace MP rockypt dirtroad.jpg (79311 bytes)

MP rockypt enter4.jpg (98284 bytes)  The road finally arrives at Mayan Palace

MP rockypt frontlawn.jpg (85438 bytes)   MP rockypt enter3.jpg (96787 bytes)  Mayan Palace likes to do grand designs for their resort entrances. Here they have constructed a row of round brick columns which encircle the driveway.  These must be the only Mayan ruins in Rocky Point.

MP rockypt enter.jpg (171554 bytes)   MP rockypt enter2.jpg (81022 bytes)  They have also incorporated ponds, cactus plantings and bubbling fountains to add to the beauty.

MP rockypt lobby.jpg (117905 bytes)   MP rockypt lobby2.jpg (106169 bytes)  Here are two views of the very elegant and tastefully decorated lobby that features comfy chairs, and four fireplaces to warm the bones on a cold desert night.  The lobby is open air and not heated.  This is also where the happy and smiling concierge sits.

MP rockypt stairs.jpg (59474 bytes)  The current resort has no elevators.  Here are the stairs you will need to use to get around.  There are three floors.  Fortunately the lobby is somehow on the 2nd level, so no matter what floor you are on it's only a one flight walk or less.

MP rockypt condo.jpg (99855 bytes)  MP rockypt lagoon.jpg (102932 bytes)  MP rockypt lagoon3.jpg (90905 bytes)

The condo buildings are set around the lagoon

MP rockypt condo2.jpg (113981 bytes)  Very similar look and construction to the current buildings in Riviera Maya.  Small terraces face the pool and ocean for the lucky occupants of the even number units.  Odd number units face the desert/mountains.  We were not among the lucky ones.

Nice view of the resort from the beach  MP rockypt bath7.jpg (77458 bytes)

  Swimming Pools !

MP rockypt pool7.jpg (123048 bytes)  Mayan Palace is noted for their large spectacular swimming pools.  While nice, the existing pool in Puerto Penasco is small by Mayan Palace standards.  This is due to the fact that this resort was originally designed to be a Sea Garden with smaller rooms and fewer amenities.

2005-02-07 030.JPG (113165 bytes)  This is the building that houses the indoor heated swimming pool.  On the backside of this building is the health Club and Spa

MP rockypt indoorpool3.jpg (95492 bytes)   MP rockypt indoorpool2.jpg (131191 bytes)   MP rockypt indoorpool.jpg (116567 bytes)  The pool is not very large.  We also thought it to be a little too shallow for our liking.  However, the water was warm and the pool was clean.  Waiters come by often to take orders for drinks and food.

Here are some shots of the inside of the condos

MP rockypt towel2.jpg (79772 bytes)  MP rockypt towel.jpg (53682 bytes)  The maids were just super.  Not only do they do a great job cleaning, but they make life fun with their creativity.

Photos of the main restaurant, BAKAL

Desyuno Buffet!   MP rockypt Bakal2.jpg (127499 bytes)  MP rockypt Bakal5.jpg (135750 bytes)

The Bakal was open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  MP rockypt Bakal.jpg (110108 bytes)

Great ocean views from the dining area.  Great food, Very Clean, great service.   MP rockypt Bakal6.jpg (101852 bytes)

Themed dinner nights such as "Surf and Turf" on Friday, "New York Strip" on Wednesday, "Prime Rib" on Monday and Mexican Fiesta on Thursday.  We enjoyed our meals there.   2005-02-07 062.JPG (119207 bytes)  MP rockypt Bakal4.jpg (113059 bytes)

Photos of the beach

MP rockypt beach8.jpg (77192 bytes)

The beach was huge!  Very flat and the sand almost white.  You could see sea  shells everywhere.  Waves never appeared to be dangerous.

We only declined to swim because it was late January and the water temp was probably only 60 degrees and the air temperature about 68 degrees.  We intend to return in summer when it should be toasty warm.   MP rockypt beach4.jpg (67305 bytes)

To the East of the existing resort they are building the NEW Mayan Palace!

MP rockypt construction2.jpg (84897 bytes)   MP rockypt construction.jpg (70464 bytes)   MP rockypt construction4.jpg (99665 bytes)

This is the construction of the new 12 story tower.  The first phase of the building is now completed and is being used for guests. MP rockypt construction3.jpg (56660 bytes)

We were informed that the new sections will be built to even higher quality Mayan Palace standards.  That is, the rooms will be larger, the furnishings nicer, the swimming pool will be huge with three tiers of cascading water and there will be many additional restaurants and shops.

Another fantastic addition will be the beautiful seaside Jack Nicklaus designed 18 hole golf course that will surround the resort.  Click here for photos of the golf course:  http://www.mayanresortsgolf.com/en/puerto/index.cfm
