AVALON REEF CLUB
Isla Mujeres
We have recently visited a new resort in Isla Mujeres called the Avalon Reef Club. Isla Mujeres is a small island located just northeast of Cancun and about a 30 minute water taxi ride away. Isla Mujeres is noted as a mecca for snorkeling, fishing and scuba diving due to the incredible clarity of the sea water here. The Avalon Reef is located at the northern most point of the island next to a popular beach called Playa Norte. This is an excellent location, with open Caribbean Sea crashing onto the rocks on the east side and the calm tranquil water of the protected Playa Norte to the west. It is also just a couple of blocks walk to the downtown business district where you can find shopping, restaurants and the dock for water taxis and ferry boats. We
toured the resort and were very impressed with the quality of construction and
size of the rooms. I am posting several photos we took while there and you
can see them below. The Avalon Resort is made up of two sections. The
large impressive pyramid shaped building features the hotel portion where guests
can purchase daily rooms or book package deals. This building is somewhat
of a landmark in Isla as it is the most visible structure when approaching the
island by boat. Avalon has completely rebuilt and renovated the building
which has sat idle for years after a devastating hurricane.
There is a cobblestone walkway that winds a short distance between the hotel building and the timeshare
villas. These villas are known as the Avalon Reef Club. On each side of the path is a row of 2 story casitas, all painted
in Avalon white with stairways leading up to the 2nd floor villas. These buildings
are all ocean front, there is actually water on three sides, and
all units have an outside terrace with Caribbean view. There are two bedroom and
one
bedroom units. The one bedroom villas can be locked off to provide a hotel room
and studio unit. The one and two bedroom villas have mini-kitchens, which while
quite small, are equipped with a mini-fridge, microwave oven, drip coffee maker,
toaster, blender and single bowl sink. The one bedroom villas feature 2
full baths, a handy thing to have.
The beach here is simply spectacular. White sand surrounds a small bay for
hundreds of feet. The water here is crystal clear and you can see fish swimming
about. The sand slopes very gradually as you venture out and it remains
very shallow for quite a distance. The sea water is calm and tranquil,
there is no seaweed or rocks and a perfect sandy bottom allows you to walk
barefoot. This is just perfect! Great snorkeling should be possible right
outside your door! There is a beach bar and restaurant right next to the
beach. And as you can see in the photos, they are building beach palapas
for shade. Avalon offers an all-inclusive
option providing all food and drink for one price.
